How to Use This Baggage Planner

1. Start your Japan trip

  • In “Your trips”, give your trip a name – e.g. NewYork → Tokyo or Japan Winter 2025.

  • Optionally add your airline (JAL, ANA, Qatar, Emirates, etc.).

  • Turn on “Per person mode” if you’re travelling as a family or group and want to track bags for each traveller.

2. Add your bags and limits

  1. Under “Bags & limits”, add each bag you’re taking:

    • Choose bag type: checked, cabin/carry-on, or personal item.

    • Enter the weight limit (kg) from your ticket or airline app (e.g. 23 kg or 7 kg).

    • Optional: add the empty bag weight if you know it.

  2. The tool will:

    • Show live progress bars for each bag.

    • Tell you how many kg spare you have or how much you’re over the limit.

3. Add items as you pack

  1. Select a bag and scroll to “Items in selected bag”.

  2. Use the dropdowns to quickly add common items (T-shirts, jeans, electronics, toiletries, etc.), or type your own custom item.

  3. Enter:

    • Category (e.g. Clothes, Electronics)

    • Quantity

    • Estimated weight per item (kg)

    • Importance (1 = optional, 5 = essential)

The bag’s total weight updates instantly as you add or remove items.

4. Fix overweight bags with suggestions

  • If a bag goes over its limit, you’ll see a red “Over by X kg” badge.

  • Click “Fix overweight” on that bag.

  • The tool will suggest:

    • Which low-importance, heavier items you can remove, and

    • Which items you could move to another bag that still has spare capacity.

5. (Optional) Track by traveller

  • Turn on Per person mode and add travellers (e.g. You, Partner, Child).

  • Assign each bag to a person.

  • The Per person overview shows:

    • How many bags each person has

    • Their total weight, and

    • Whether any of their bags are overweight.

6. Come back later

  • Everything is saved locally in your browser (no login needed).

  • Reopen the page on the same device to continue packing or adjust weights before your flight.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1. Is this tool only for Japan trips?

It’s designed with Japan travel in mind (baggage-heavy, long-haul flights), but you can use it for any destination. Just enter your airline, bag limits, and items as usual.

Check your e-ticket, airline app, or booking confirmation. Most airlines show baggage allowance per passenger, per bag (e.g. “2 x 23 kg checked bags” or “7 kg cabin bag”). Use those numbers in the Bag limit (kg) field.

No. The planner does not connect to airline systems and can’t guarantee baggage rules or fees. Always treat it as a planning helper and confirm final allowances and charges directly with your airline.

The tool simply adds up the weights you enter (bag + items). The accuracy depends on:

  • How accurate your scale / estimates are

  • Whether you include everything (e.g. gifts, snacks, jackets, etc.)

For best results, use a luggage scale for final checks.

Importance (1–5) helps the tool prioritise what to remove or move when a bag is overweight.

  • 1–2: “Nice to have / Could skip”

  • 3: Useful

  • 4–5: Important / Essential

When you click “Fix overweight”, the tool will first suggest low-importance, heavier items to drop or move.

Yes. Turn on Per person mode in the trip settings, add travellers (e.g. You, Partner, Child), and assign each bag to someone. The Per person overview shows total weight and overweight bags per traveller.
